Baby sleep – Tips and tricks to try If you want your baby to sleep well, you have to teach her how to do it, because you make sleepers, they don’t come with it. We will cover a few proven methods to get your baby to sleep through the night and get rid of that bad sleeping habits. Having a routine is always the best Babies are great learners and everything they learn is through the signs. If you establish a bedtime routine, you’re clearly telling your baby that it’s time to sleep. What kind of a routine, you ask? Well, any that works for you. You are the one that knows your baby the best and if it’s a bath and a cuddle, or a story and a kiss, or nursing/bottle and a cuddle, that’s totally up to you. There’s only one thing to keep in mind – it has to be the same every night or you will confuse your baby and miss the opportunity to teach her when it’s time to sleep. Drowsy but awake If you put your baby to her crib when she is already asleep you will most likely have to be getting up every time she wakes up at night (which is a lot) and soothe her back to sleep. Rather than waiting for her to fall asleep while you’re carrying or feeding her, make sure she is awake but very drowsy. Put her in her crib and try shushing and caressing her a bit until you slowly stop both and she is sound asleep. Early is better than late Don’t fall into a trap where you wait for your baby to start crying and get all nervous until you finally start your bedtime routine. Babies produce higher level of melatonin when their tiny little bodies send a signal to their brain that it’s time to sleep. That usually happens around sunset, but since the sunset can be around 9 pm during summer, keep your sleeping schedule around 7 pm. If you wait for your baby to start crying and rubbing her eyes, you’re already late. Overstimulated and overtired babies sleep poorly. Instead, look for the behavior change like when the baby is calm, seems bored and less active. That’s the perfect time to start your bedtime routine. More day sleep means more night sleep Many parents think that their baby has bad sleeping habits at night because she sleeps too much during the day. Well, the fact is, the more the baby rests during the day, the better she will sleep during the night. It doesn’t really make sense, but it’s the holly truth in establishing good sleeping habits, so make sure not to skip the naps. The last thing you want, after a long day, is to have your baby wake every 30 minutes because she is overtired. Juggling between daily tasks and a new baby is never easy and that’s why a lot of parents are desperate to find a way to make their baby sleep. It’s hard being a parent, especially for the first-time moms and dads, because babies don’t come with instruction papers. You have to be prepared and strong. You have to remind yourself that it will all be in the past one day and that this little masterpiece of yours is the most beautiful thing that could ever happen to you.
