Mothers Know Best

Real Moms Share 1001 Tips on Pregnancy, Birth, and the First Year

MOTHERS REALLY DO KNOW BEST. That’s why moms-to-be and new moms search out and appreciate the guidance and wisdom of experienced mothers. In Mothers Know Best: Real Moms Share 1001 Tips for Pregnancy, Birth and the First Year, 500 wise moms from across America, Canada, and 10 other countries—from CEO’s to stay-at-home moms, professors to scientists, authors to rock-and-roll musicians—reveal surprising suggestions, helpful hints, and sanity-saving solutions—both practical and psychological—to help make life as a brand new mom a little easier and much more enjoyable.

Every pregnant woman and new mom needs a support system — a group of experienced mothers who will lovingly share their well-earned wisdom and secrets. Mothers Know Best captures the unique spirit of sorority that all moms share, the age-old passing of wisdom from matriarchs to new moms by providing down to earth advice from real mommies. From birthing options to play groups, from morning sickness to sleep deprivation, from doulas to diapers to the new dad, these mommies and their strollers have literally been around the block and tell it like it is, with compassion, understanding and, often, humor.

The book is divided into over 100 subject chapters, beginning with pregnancy advice, followed by the birth section, then baby’s first year. And unlike most pregnancy/baby books, the largest section in Mothers Know Best emphasizes "mommy care" and addresses the physical, social, psychological, and practical struggles and challenges that first-time moms encounter as they adapt to this new role and new reality. Special topics—adoption, multiples, special needs babies, and single parenting—are also included.

The president of the March of Dimes, Dr. Jennifer Howse, has written the foreword and a portion of the sale of each book is being donated to the March of Dimes, a hugely respected charity that mothers overwhelmingly support and look to for information on pregnancy.

About the Authors - Connie Correia Fisher and Joanne Correia, a daughter and mother team, are the co-authors of five cookbooks and the former publisher and editor of Cuizine magazine. They happily live five minutes away from each other in New Jersey. Correia Fisher’s own son was born premature and she has been active supporter of the March of Dimes for the last 10 years.

A sample of tips from Mothers Know Best
From the Pregnancy Section: "It is best to conceive when you are only 75% sure. There’s never the absolute perfect time: you always want to lose that extra five pounds, gain a bigger savings account, or reorganize the house. Seventy-five percent means your heart and your head are aligned. That’s as good as it gets!" ~ Wendy, counselor and mother of Katie, age 14 months, and Baby #2 on the way, New Jersey

From the Birth Section: "Be sure to talk to your doctor prior to labor about which muscles you should use for "pushing" during natural childbirth. A friend explained it to me and, being pregnant for the first time, it was something that I had never given a second thought. Prior to that conversation I truly believed that you should push with your "stomach muscles." I’d seen it on TV a million times… " Kim, mother of Blake, age 3, California

"This book validates what we mothers know about the act and art of mothering. It catapults us to the esteemed level of experts and provides a format for us to share the lessons we gained with other mothers with whom we feel such a warm solidarity. Let it live long among the growing cannon of books about, by, and for mothers!"

Beth Osnes, author of Twice Alive: A Spiritual Guide to Mothering through Pregnancy and the Child’s First Year, and co-founder of Mothers Acting Up, (mothersactingup.org)

"New mothers are often inundated with advice. Sometimes the advice we get is just what we need to hear; all too often it’s overwhelming. The beauty of this book is that it is a compilation of mothers’ voices, in all their complexity. The suggestions in here, from real moms like you, are as differing as the mothers who wrote them, and yet they are all saying the same thing: I have been where you are, you will get through this, and you are not alone."

Andi Buchanan, author of Mother Shock: Loving Every (Other) Minute of It

"No one knows parenting like another parent. Mothers Know Best is like sitting down to a cup of coffee with your best girlfriend: you’ll laugh, sigh, and ultimately (hopefully?) wind up motivated to get up and finish the dishes."

Sarah Smiley, syndicated columnist, author, and mother of two

"Full of warm and practical wisdom, this book nurtures mothers." Pec Indman Ed.D., MFT, co-author of Beyond the Blues, A Guide to Understanding and Treating Prenatal and Postpartum Depression

"As a parent educator I am thrilled any time I see a book that shares how things REALLY go in families. This book couldn’t be any more true...the advice comes from those on the front lines—the MOMS." Sharon Silver, The Center for Conscious Parenting

"Mothers Know Best has what every new mother needs: real advice from all kinds of folks, from moms to midwives to authors to nannies and more. Each entry is short and easy-to-read, so even the most exhausted new mother can get in a few valuable bits of advice between diaper changes. I wish I’d had a copy when I got home from the hospital with my newborn. That, and a full night’s sleep, would have been just spectacular."

Jen Singer, author of 14 Hours ‘Til Bedtime: A Stay-at-Home Mom’s Life in 27 Funny Little Stories

"Reading Mothers Know Best is like sharing the laughter, tears, joys, and triumphs of motherhood with 1,001 of your best girlfriends. It is the ultimate support group for moms, right at your fingertips."

Deborah Shelton, author of The Five Minute Parent: Fun & Fast Activities for You and Your Little Ones
