The seat is an almost full recline, but not fully flat. The back is about 20 degrees up from horizontal and then the seat angles up a bit also, so there is a V that cradles the child and helps hold them in place. It is more than enough for a sleeping 1 month old, but can not be considered a newborn flat bed.
